What to Know Before You Watch It is a dazzler.America Ferrera Looks Back On The “Super Traumatic” Backlash She Received After Sharing Her Sexual Assault Story During The #MeToo Movement I can’t believe “Nocturnal Animals”, save for a supporting actor nomination, was ignored by the Academy of Motion Picture Sciences. The very fact that Edward inserts a daughter into the book is chilling when we learn what Susan hid from him. Similarly, we recall the pose of Susan’s daughter’s body when she sits up in bed to answer Susan’s phone call. We can’t help but recall the fat women lying on what now seem biers in the movie’s opening. This, after we’ve seen the wife and daughter characters in Edward’s novel, stunningly arranged on posh, tufted red velvet.īut our memory digs even deeper. Susan, sitting on a red sofa, demanding to know if the life she’s living now is “it,” the apex of her upward trajectory. You’ll think about it long after the movie is over. Everything about it, even what seems hammered home, makes sense. The way the movie is structured - its meticulous order, the points at which the flashbacks to Susan and Edward in the good old days and scenes from Edward’s novel are dropped in - makes the whole thing perfect. And Tom Ford, who directed “Nocturnal Animals”, adds heavy duty symbolism to the mix: a classic Mercedes versus a cheesy muscle car, the same sort of muscle car situated in don’t-miss fashion behind Edward in the scene when Susan casts him aside.īut it all works, and that’s the genius of it. The up-tight upper middle class family harassed by redneck evildoers is nothing new. But both are used effectively in this film. Susan’s mom is the perfect caricature of a rich Texas housewife and Susan’s fellow board member at the museum takes trendsetting to new and hilarious heights.Ĭaricature is an important word when assessing this movie. There are some great set pieces in the film. Its realism exaggerates the artificiality of Susan’s life. It’s a horrific story that is acted out on the screen as Susan, surrounded by empty opulence, reads. The rest of the movie is about Edward’s revenge, which begins when he sends Susan the galleys of his forthcoming blockbuster book. Meanwhile, there is Edward (played by Jake Gyllenhaal), the real deal, the husband who was struggling to become a published writer when she dropped him and left him behind. Susan (portrayed by Amy Adams) gets this, and knows, too, that it is this contortion that has enabled her to live the life she thought she wanted: an architecturally stunning home, servants who will read her personal mail aloud to her, outrageous friends, gorgeous husband. Or maybe “art” exhibit would be a better way to express it.Īrt, as we enter Susan Hastings’ gallery, has become grotesque. It turns out this is a Los Angeles art exhibit. Then we see even more fat women, these in various poses on stark white rectangles. “Nocturnal Animals” starts with slow motion shots of really fat women dancing pretty much naked. I watched it twice and then couldn’t keep myself from writing about it. Last week on Spectrum’s On Demand, there it was. I wanted to see the movie “Nocturnal Animals” when it was in Austin but I kept putting it off and putting it off and then it was gone.
